AWSensors Dx is a company created as a spin-off of Advanced Wave Sensors, SL, Spain and Greek researchers from the Biosensors Group established at the Univ. of Crete and the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (IMBB-FORTH). AWSensorsDx will exploit Intellectual Property produced and owned by AWS and IMBB-FORTH.
George studied Biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), obtained his MSc in Biochemistry from Sussex University (UK) and was granted his PhD in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine from the University of Crete (Greece). George has a longstanding interest in genetics and technology. His track record includes 30 scientific publications, 4 patents and 3 awards in Innovation challenges.
Electra Gizeli, FRSC, is a chemist by training with a Ph.D. from the Univ. of Cambridge. As a BBSRC-Fellow, she established acoustic biosensors group at the Univ. of Cambridge (1996-2003). Currently, she is a Professor at the Dept. of Biology, Univ. of Crete & Group Leader at IMBB-FORTH, Greece. She has co-authored more than 70 publications, several edited books/chapters and co-invented 4 patents. She is interested in the transfer of innovative results from the lab to the market. Work by her group has received several distinctions, including the “2015 Nokia Open Innovation Challenge” Award and 1st Price in 2016 “Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship” national competition (NHRF).
Antonio Arnau is Founder of AWSensors Company and is Full Professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Between 1999 and 2008 he was Vice-Dean of Foreign Affairs of ETSI Telecommunication. He has over 25 years of experience in technical project management, research and teaching. His professional experience includes electronic design, bioelectronics, communications, acoustic wave circuits and sensors, as well as biosensors.
Achilleas Tsortos obtained a B.Sc. in Physics from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University at Buffalo, New York, USA. Following a Postdoctoral/Research Associate position at the National Research Centre “Demokritos” in Athens, he joined the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology in Heraklion in 2006. He recently proposed a theoretical model explaining the acoustic behavior of DNA at sensor surfaces leading to a method currently under Patent protection. He is the recipient of the “2013 Greek Innovation Awards” and the “2015 Nokia Open Innovation Challenge Awards” distinctions.
Jan is MSc in Mechanics as well as Industrial Economics and Management at KTH in Stockholm. Has extensive experience in business, now from the wholly-owned company Rekonstructa AB, which includes real estate ownership and management, equity trading, equity participation in companies and a number of commitments from external customers. He belongs to the BoD of Oasmia Pharmaceutical among other companies and is Senior Adviser at Stockholm Corporate Finance which is a Swedish, independent and privately-owned financial advisor under the supervision of the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority. Has operated through his own business since 1985. 1972-1985 employee of Salén & Wicander AB and CEO since 1977.
